July 20, 2009: Congratulations to Mario Treibit - Referee Emeritus

Mario Treibit, member of GEVA, was presented the Wilber Peck Referee Emeritus award this year at the USAV Open tournament. This award is to honor and recognize persons who have retired from refereeing on the national level and who have made significant contributions to the USAV Referee program. The criteria for selection:

  1. Have contributed unselfish and distinguished leadership to local, regional and national-level development programs.
  2. Have officiated at a USA Championship Event for a minimum of 10 years.
  3. Have demonstrated characteristics that are consistent with the high ideals and purposes of USVA Official Code of Ethics as approved by the USA National Referees Commission.
  4. Have retired from active refereeing at the USA Open Events traditionally conducted in conjunction with the Corporation’s Annual Meeting.

Previous GEVA Referee Emeritus award Winners include George Chain, Doug Denure, Tom Harrigan, Heinz Schaal, and now Mario. As you can see, our Region has made a rich contribution to the history of officiating in USA Volleyball. Many of our newer members may not have encountered some of these venerated officials, but you have all been touched by what they had to share. In addition to being a retired National Volleyball Referee, Mario also holds the following credentials: retired FIVB Arbiter, Associated Head Coach for St Johns Women's Volleyball team, former head coach of the Rutgers University Men's Vollebyall team, and former Head or Assistant coach for the USA, Puerto Rico, Israeli, and Netherlands national volleyball teams.

A video biography of Mario is available on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBw5obaFJYY). The video was prepared by Gary Colberg, for the 2009 Wilber H. Peck Referee Emeritus award, which was presented to Mario at USA Volleyball's Boyce Banquet, in recognition of his long and meritorious contribution, to the sport of Volleyball.
